Ordination of Trina Ceone Holmberg (June
13, 2009)
Moravians from across the Canadian District, those
especially from Bruderheim and Heimtal gathered on a
warm and sun filled Saturday June 13, 2009 at Heimtal
Moravian Church to witness and celebrate the Ordination
of Trina Holmberg as a Deacon
of the Moravian Church. The Rt.
Reverend Blair Couch presided as Bishop, the
congregation accompanied by Erin Petrella, sang
Come, Let Us All With Gladness Raise, as The
Reverend Stephen Gohdes, The Reverend Fred Tober, Ken Holmberg, and Ruth Bartz
presented Trina for Ordination. During the service
Bruderheim Moravians, Russ Lotsberg, Armin Kottke and
Elaine Bartz celebrated the occasion with guitars and
voice.
In Bishop Blair’s charge to Trina, she lauded her
gift for being with scripture.
She commissioned her to share that gift in her
ministry, teaching and inviting others to an
understanding of how scripture directs our everyday
lives. To
conclude the afternoon the Heimtal Congregation hosted a
reception for The Reverend Trina and Ken Holmberg.
The Canadian District offers Prayers and Best
Wishes to Trina and Ken as Trina begins her ministry in
Unionville, Michigan.

Record Proceeds at Christ Church
Garage Sale
The annual garage sale is Christ Moravian Church's main
fund raiser. The event is large enough that they
rent a tent and there are long lineups for the sale
opening and for the great BBQed burgers. This
year's sale yeilded $13,000+. Congratulations
Christ Church.

Stewardship Meetings Held in
Edmonton (April, 2009)
During the week of April
19th,
Stewardship meetings were held separately with each of the Joint
Boards of the Edmonton Churches (Rio Terrace, Heimtal,
Edmonton,
Good News, Millwoods, Bruderheim).
We were fortunate that Gary Marsh,
Director of Stewardship for the Northern Province of Moravian
Churches (based in
Bethlehem,
PA),
could lead us in discussions that gave many people energy and
new thoughts on what Stewardship is all about.

Good Shepherd Church Opens
Time Capsule (May 2009)
On Sunday May 24, 2009
Good Shepherd celebrated 107 years of service in
Calgary
and 30 years of service in the Huntington Hills Community. In
1977, after 75 years of service in Bridgeland, the congregation
packed up and moved to Huntington Hills to begin a new ministry.
We celebrated with a Faithful Servants Lovefeast remembering
those who served in the past 30 years and recognizing those in
the congregation who continue to serve with new vision.
In 1979 two time
capsules were filled and placed in the wall of the foyer behind
the name plate when the new building was dedicated. The Board
decided this would be a good time to open the capsules. So what
was inside the capsules? Rev. Alan Taylor was on hand to help
Rev. Rick Beck and explain the contents: a Daily Text and
The
Moravian, the membership list
and budget for that year, maps of the area used to visit homes
in the area, lists of donors and letters of affirmation from the
community and the district, worship bulletins from significant
services from 1977 to 1979 and photos of all the churches the
congregation has worshiped in over the years. Rick noted the
time capsule identified the technology of the time: all the
documents were created on a typewriter or hand written. What did
we add to the capsule? If you are still here for our 150th
anniversary, maybe you will find out!

GSC Children Raise Money for
Ahuas Clinic Solar Panels (March 2009)
The Good Shepherd
Church Mission Committee likes to have fun with mission and
outreach projects and involve children and at the same time
educate the congregation about the people and places they are
helping. Their overseas project during Lent this year gave them
six weeks to meet our goal of raising $500 to buy a solar panel
for the
Moravian Medical Clinic in Ahuas,
Honduras.
Thanks to Dr. Rudy’s website at
http://ahuasclinic.com/index.shtml
and
some fruitful Internet searches they gathered informative maps,
photos and information to make a poster and bulletin insert.
They made a mock solar panel of 250 paper solar cells. For every
Toonie donated a cell was covered with a paper Toonie until they
covered all the cells and reached their goal. They had a Toonie
Bank that was kept handy at fellowship time after service. A
jiggle of the jar reminded folks it was Toonie time.
